Tips about Pittsburgh Carpet Cleaning
We were recently interviewed for a upcoming publication called “Property Value Maximizer: Tips & Secrets From America’s Top Real Estate & Home Improvement Professionals”
QUALITY CARPET CLEANING EVERY
HOME OWNER SHOULD CONSIDER
“Featuring an Interview with Dan Worley"

Why is it important for homeowners to regularly have their carpets cleaned, if they are interested in preserving the value of their homes?
Imagine putting a white T-shirt on your floor, and walking on it every day for a year. What would it look like? Would it not be in desperate need of the washing machine? Of course. Carpet is a textile, like that T-shirt. Because it is made of more complex fibers, you may not notice the dirt as much as you do on that white T-shirt, but it’s there. And over time, if it’s not “washed,” that dirt can be so engrained that it can no longer be cleaned out. (Just like you would throw out that T-shirt after that year, because it’s too far gone for the washing machine to fix.) Buying quality carpet is expensive, so that makes it an investment. And a quality carpet should last 10-15 years. How soon can people walk on a carpet after it's cleaned?

And a quality carpet should last 10-15 years. How soon can people walk on a carpet after it's cleaned?
Right away. Just make sure you are wearing clean house shoes, or shoe covers (plastic “booties”). Don’t walk on it barefoot (your feet have oils) or with socks (because your feet will get wet) until the carpet is dry.How should homeowners deal with recurring spots & stains (e.g. pet stains, children, etc.)?
Carefully. Never, ever use a spotting product that contains bleach! It will ruin the carpet. There are spotting products you can use that do not leave soap in the carpet and that prevent wicking, which is what causes spots to reoccur. The difference between spots and stains: a spot is something that can be cleaned off (like a bit of chocolate on your wood table); a stain is something that has permanently changed the color (an applied mahogany stain on an unfinished oak table). Spots can be cleaned; stains can’t. But sometimes there are tricks (special professional products) to hide the appearance of stains.
How frequently should homeowners have their carpets cleaned?
Once a year is a good routine, but depending on usage, it may need to be more. For example, you have an asphalt driveway and wear shoes in the house. Polyester/nylon carpets are “oil loving”, meaning the tiny bits of asphalt that get tracked in over time bond to the carpet, making it difficult to clean out. It leads to black or yellowish traffic areas. If you go too long in between cleanings, the carpet won’t last long. How long does it take for a home's carpets to be cleaned?
It depends on how many areas of carpet, and if furniture needs moved. Generally, 6 rooms of carpet should take between 2-3 hours to clean, including set-up times. Can carpet cleaners do anything about bleached or faded spots?
There is a process called color correction, which some carpet cleaners offer.Who is typically responsible for moving the furniture, before and after a carpet is cleaned?
Many companies offer two different prices, depending on what the homeowner wants to do. One price is for the technician to move the furniture. Usually homeowners have small things out of the way and miscellaneous items picked up off the floor. We do not move flat screen TVs, internet/cable modems, furniture so heavy it can break if moved, and curios filled with breakables. The other option is for the technician to clean the open areas only. So the homeowner may move small things out of the way but not have the space under dressers, etc cleaned, since they do not get traffic. Many people go with this option, as it saves a little money, and you do not have a wet carpet “trapped” under furniture. What is "stain protection" and why is this important?
Many synthetic carpets are manufactured with a stain guard. Simply, this is a product imbedded in the fibers of the carpet that helps to repel spills so they do not get absorbed into the carpet. This protection is eventually lessened through wear, not cleaning. There are topical stain protectors that a carpet cleaner can apply after cleaning. This will leave the carpet wet for a long period of time, since enough has to be applied to coat the carpet fibers. These topical stain protectors are not considered “green,” and in my opinion are not “family and pet friendly/safe”, due to the fact that it is a chemical product being left on the carpet. Are there any types of stains that carpet cleaners usually can't improve or remove?
The biggest one is tumeric, which you find in most mustards, so it is often called a mustard stain. This bright yellow food coloring is virtually impossible to remove. We’ve even seen it used as a food coloring in low-fat microwave popcorn, and it ruined the carpet when the hot bag fell over.
Another one that can be difficult is decaf coffee. Regular coffee is a harder spot to remove for sure but decaf is the worst. It has a dye added so it looks like dark coffee. Without the dye the decaf would look like a cup of green tea and that’s not going to sell. So when you drop a cup of piping hot decaf you’rereally dropping a piping hot cup of dye on your carpet. These stains can be very difficult to remove or even lighten, especially when the home owner has used everything on the shelf to try to remove the stain before calling a pro. Hot and dye is a perfect combination for a stain that stays forever! Can deep indentations in carpets, from heavy furniture, be fixed?

It depends on the type of fiber. Polyester carpets do not bounce back; it permanently crushes the fibers. Nylon carpets fare much better. Are the chemicals, used to clean carpets, safe for pets?
It all depends on the products being used. There are safe products out there, but the aggressive cleaning products needed to clean very dirty carpet are not rated as safe. What should people do with their pets on the day that they have their carpets cleaned?
It is best to keep them confined to an area where they do not get on the carpet during the cleaning, or can run out the door as the technician is working. Can carpet cleaning remove pet odors in addition to pet stains? Do additional services typically need to be purchased for this?
Yes. There are even special products for removing odors that have passed through the carpet, into the pad. We typically include light odor removal in our cleaning service; if the pet damage is severe, it is best for us to be made aware of that before scheduling the appointment. What is the best method for having carpets cleaned and what are the differences between these applications?
For residential carpet, the best is hot water extraction, commonly called steam cleaning. It’s the most effective for “washing away” soils. Encapsulation cleaning (a low-moisture process) works very well on commercial carpet, and can do a nice job on residential berbers also.
Thank you Dan…

Pittsburgh Grout and Tile Cleaning

This grout and ceramic tile cleaning job was for a business in West Mifflin PA. For security reasons the doors could not be kept open, so we were not able to use our truckmount. Did that mean we wouldn't be able to get the results we hoped for. Not at all!

there were 7 large rust spots on the ceramic tile from metal poles. So we used a strong pH cleaner, and scrubbed with our Cimex machine. It almost removed all the rust, but I could still see a few tiles with a light outline of rust. I followed with a strong cleaner of the opposite pH that had a boost of peroxide, and then ran the Cimex again; this totally removed the rest of the rust. And the grout turned out amazing. The Office manager said "
Dan and Jen,
I wanted to touch base with you to let you know how pleased my bosses were with the job you did on the floors. They couldn’t get over how nice they all looked. In fact, they were the talk of the employees on Monday morning –everyone commenting on how awesome they looked. Thanks for everything."
Most Cleaners would not go to this great a effort on a commercial job. We are not most cleaners. Call us today 412-414-3828

Pet Odor and Pet Stain Removal
We love our pets; we love them like family. But our dogs and cats do make mistakes sometimes -- and other times they can be just plain misbehaving! Most companies in Pittsburgh offer “pet odor control,” but we offer “pet odor removal” -- removing the unwanted pet urine and odors, bringing a breath of fresh air to your home.
Can we 100% guarantee that we can remove the odors? Yes and no. Why do we say that? As long as you are keeping the culprit (puppy or kitty) in the home, we can’t guarantee that they won’t do it again. But we can guarantee that you will be happy with your freshly cleaned
carpet, upholstery, or mattress. We can also guarantee that we will not clean your fine things in a way that will be a breeding ground for bacteria.
Some cleaners will tell you that carpet cleaning will disinfect your carpet-- but that’s a myth. The high heat and water from the carpet cleaning only provides the bacteria and others nasties the exact environment they need to grow. So what can be done?
Urine is acidic as it comes out, but as the bacteria grows it changes the urine to alkaline. Most carpet cleaning products are alkaline, and that’s why the spots are not going away when you try to do it yourself -- in fact you could just be setting the stain more. We clean with a carpet-safe acidic cleanser to remove the urine, and use a product that kills the bacteria. We can saturate the infected area with the anti-bacterial product and then extract it with a specialized tool, or inject a bacteria-eating enzyme product into the pad.

Advice for hiring a carpet cleaner in Pittsburgh

Well, obviously I’m going to say: “Hire Clean Interiors!” But here’s some things you should be aware of before hiring any Pittsburgh carpet cleaner:
You may have seen local news exposes about shady carpet cleaners who paint the rest of us in a bad light. Because of this, consumers in Pittsburgh, like yourself, need to be cautious about who they have into their home, and the quality of their professionalism. Clean Interiors has a reputation both privately and professionally as being up-front and honest… that’s just who we are.
An honest and professional Pittsburgh carpet cleaner will not give you a really cheap price over the phone, only to raise it enormously when they come to do the service. An honest and diligent Pittsburgh carpet cleaner will respect your home, your possessions, and your privacy. A truthful and reputable Pittsburgh carpet cleaner will clean your carpets with the proper products and procedures for the type of cleaning you are paying for.
Check out reviews of who you are thinking of hiring (Google Places is a great resource) and don’t be afraid to ask questions!
And by all means call Clean Interiors for your Pittsburgh carpet cleaning! 412-414-3828
Do you really need to get your carpets cleaned every year?

When it comes to carpet cleaning in Pittsburgh, even a carpet that appears to be not too dirty is filled with hidden dirt. That’s not a bad thing -- as long as you hire a carpet cleaner once a year or so -- because carpet acts as a filter in your home, trapping airborne dust and dirt.
Vacuuming helps to take out the trapped dirt, but you really need to have it “washed.” I like to think of it this way: Imagine placing a nice white t-shirt on the floor and walking on it every day for six months... is running the vacuum over it going to make it clean like new? It needs the washing machine!
So realize that even if you think your carpet isn’t dirty, it is -- that’s just how carpet works. In fact, that’s why carpet manufactures require you to have your carpet professionally cleaned every year in order to keep your warranty valid.
Carpet manufacturers are starting to tie their carpet warranties to the use of green chemicals. "The six largest carpet manufacturers in the United States, including Shaw, Mohawk and Bolyu, have independently decided to tie their carpet warranties to the exclusive use of CRI Seal of Approval cleaning chemicals and equipment," says CRI's Braun.
So yes, you should get your carpets cleaned regularly! It's good for your carpets and for your health.

There are so many beautiful marble floors in Pittsburgh! Whether it's the South Hills, North Hills, Fox Chapel, or New Kensington. Today we were in Moon Township, polishing a beautiful sandy-colored marble with hints of pink. This collage shows the 5-step process of polishing, using different diamond grits to take out scratches and bring the floor to a shine. As the polishing process proceeds, the natural beauty of the marble becomes more vibrant!

According to online reports, the asthma & allergy friendly certification program has developed and adopted a certification standard and testing protocol for feather and down-filled bedding.
For many years, the medical community has only recommended bedding items with synthetic fill for people with asthma and allergy to prevent exposure to common allergens, including mites and proteins that may be present in traditional fill. However, technological advancements and regulations in the production process of certain modern feather and down has resulted in a more uniform and refined natural down product.
"Our testing finally provides a way to determine the level of allergenic proteins in feather and down products,” according to Mike Tringale, Vice President at AAFA, “which is a major advancement for the bedding industry, and a benefit to our patients and families.”
In addition to the reduced allergen fill, all certified asthma & allergy friendly pillows are constructed with a proven allergen barrier fabric and have demonstrated the ability to withstand the recommended wash and dry frequency included with each product. Whats stronger, a wool or rayon fiber in an oriental rug?
Pittsburgh Upholstery Cleaning

Pittsburgh Upholstery Cleaning
Upholstery cleaning keeps the furniture in your home looking its best, whether it’s a family heirloom, or a couch that’s worn in just right. If you’re in the greater Pittsburgh area, and you need your upholstery cleaned, it’s time to call Clean Interiors.
We use cleaning products that are family-friendly and safer for the environment.
Dan and Jen are Pittsburgh’s Fine Fabric Upholstery Specialists, so we always test for fiber type and for color fastness before cleaning any fine fabric.
Would you clean your silk shirt with the same equipment as you would clean the motor of your car? Never!
Yet Pittsburgh is full of cleaners that will clean your expensive couches and chairs like a carpet. You wouldn’t confuse your couch for your carpet. Yet some carpet cleaners don't seem to know or care about the difference. The results could be devastating.
That’s why you need a specialist. Someone that will treat your upholstery like a Chemist -- not a Hockey Player coming to slam out another job.
The cleaning of your fine, natural fabric upholstery can’t be trusted to just any carpet cleaner in Pittsburgh. These items tend to have color loss or can bleed colors that can damage your upholstery, if they are cleaned like a carpet.
We use the industry’s safest and newest chemistry to clean your upholstery, using Sapphire Scientific’s Upholstery Cleaning Systems. This means that our products, and even the tools that we use, are for designed for your upholstery. This is very important when dealing with natural fibers and microfibers.
You are sure to get a quality job and a true cleaning, with no extra charges or hidden fees.

Why Clean Interiors believes in using “green” and safe products
Why Clean Interiors believes in using “green” and safe products:
The first reason why is because Dan is highly allergic to soaps. I can’t use most store-bought detergents in our laundry even, so I mostly use a truly organic product I order online (I can tell you more about that in person). Tide gives him hives so bad he needs to see a doctor for steroids.
Dan can also be extremely affected by certain chemical odors. The #1- selling professional carpet cleaning detergent booster contains a solvent made from oranges… which although it may sound like a natural product, the vapors make him extremely ill. So keep in mind that just because many products may be labeled “green” or sound like they’re natural, it doesn’t mean it’s safe for humans or pets. (Remember, you can call arsenic natural but you sure don’t want to be around it.)
So we use safe cleaning products because we need to for our own health and yours.
But can “green” really clean? This is how the Carpet & Rug Institute defines their green certification process for carpet cleaning products: “We start with the premise that if it doesn’t clean, it can’t be green. A product first of all has to work on carpet. Then if it passes through that screen, we determine if it’s green. And we are absolutely convinced you can have both.”
What if a carpet is just too dirty to use a green product? We will use, with your approval, a more traditional carpet cleaning product that is safer than many on the market. We like to use it because it contains no butyls or other harsh solvents and it doesn’t make Dan ill.

Very Bad Cons
So we have been trying to sell some equipment on Craigslist and Ebay. I can’t tell you how many scammers have emailed us...so Jen has started to have some fun with them:
I saw your advert on ebay and am interested in buying your item. let me know your final asking price. Regards Greg
Jens says" Which item are you referring to? If you are interested, you can make arrangements with us to view the equipment and make an offer."
Greg Says" Thanks for getting back to me, am presently in UK. I want to ship the item down here, there won't be any problem about the shipment because i have a shipping broker who will be responsible for the shipment. Pls,i will like to know the current condition and will also appreciate it if you can send me some pictures. Thanks Greg"
Jen Says: I have 8 pictures of it on eBay. Do you need more? It runs very well. The only thing it needs is a new squeegee blade. If there is any detail you want a closer picture of, let me know. Whoever your shipper is, they would be responsible for packaging it, and we don't accept credit cards or checks... only cash or local money orders. We also cannot deliver it to your shipper. Thanks
Greg the very bad con artist says:"Am okay with the condition,This is what am going to do in term of payment, I have a friend in the state who is owing me some money, i will instruct him to makeout a money order to you in the amount he's owing me and as soon as you get the payment cashed, you will deduct your money and you will handover my balance to my shipping broker at the time of pickup or you will send it to them. I think this payment method is okay by you, so get back to me with your contact information ASAP because i also have some other goods to pickup in the state.. Get back to me with your contact info for payment processing. Regards"
Jen Says: Sorry, don't handle my business that way. If you truly want this awesome machine, have your friend come and buy it from me, and he can take it to your shipper. Cash only. Goodbye.
